How to Get Rid of Cockroaches: What Actually Works

By KNS Pest Management

Killing the roaches you can see will not get rid of cockroaches for good. For every one that runs across your kitchen floor at 2 a.m., there are usually dozens more inside wall gaps, behind the fridge, under the sink and in the hinges of your cabinets. A real cockroach infestation only ends when you cut off their food, remove their water, block their hiding places, put bait where they travel, and find out where they are coming from. Do all five together and a small roach problem often clears in two to four weeks. Spray alone, and they are usually back before the month is over.

This guide is written for how homes actually work in Pakistani cities: shared walls in apartments, open drain lines, monsoon humidity, cardboard boxes from deliveries, and kitchens that run from early morning to late night. Some of it you can do yourself tonight. Some of it needs a professional, and we will tell you where that line is.

The 20-Minute Night Inspection

Most people treat cockroaches blind. They spray the kitchen floor, see a few dead roaches, and call it done. Before you buy or spray anything, spend twenty minutes finding out how big the problem is.

Wait until the house is quiet, ideally an hour after lights-out. Take a torch and a phone. Open the kitchen cabinets slowly and shine the light into the corners. Look under the sink, behind the stove, behind and under the fridge, inside the drawer where the tea bags and biscuits live, and around the gas cylinder area. Then check the bathroom vanity and the gap around the geyser.

What you are looking for:

  • Live roaches in the light. If you see them out in the open at night, the nest is crowded. Roaches only come out in daylight when there is no room left in the hiding places.
  • Droppings. Small black specks like ground pepper (German cockroaches) or larger cylindrical pellets (American cockroaches), usually along edges and inside cabinet corners.
  • Egg cases. Brown, bean-shaped capsules about the size of a grain of rice or slightly bigger.
  • Smear marks and a musty smell. A strong oily smell in a closed cabinet means a long-running infestation.
  • Tiny, pale roaches. These are nymphs, and they mean the colony is breeding in your home, not just passing through.

For a more accurate map, stick glue traps in five spots (under the sink, behind the fridge, beside the stove, in the bathroom and near the main drain) and leave them for three nights. The trap with the most catches is where your treatment should start. This one step saves a lot of money, because you stop treating rooms that are not the problem.

How to Get Rid of Cockroaches in the Kitchen

The kitchen is where roaches live because it gives them everything at once: food, water, warmth and dark gaps. If your cockroaches in the kitchen problem keeps returning, the answer is almost always one of the spots below.

Cabinets and shelves

Empty the lower cabinets completely, vacuum every corner, wipe with warm water and dish soap, and let them dry. Roaches love the dark space where cabinet walls meet the back panel. Line the shelves with plain paper you can throw away every few weeks.

Sink and drains.

A damp sink area is the top water source in most kitchens. Fix any dripping tap, dry the sink at night, and do not leave dishes soaking. Pour boiling water down the drain once a week, and clean the trap under the sink if you can reach it. Old drain pipes with gaps around the wall opening are common entry points, so check that gap.

Behind the fridge and stove.

The warm motor area behind a fridge is a favourite nesting spot, and crumbs and grease collect behind the stove for months. Pull both out (carefully, with help) and clean the floor and wall behind them. Do not skip this. Many kitchens look spotless in front and are full of roaches behind.

Grease and crumbs

A thin layer of cooking oil on the wall tiles, the cooker hood or the top of cabinets is food for roaches. Degrease these surfaces. Sweep and wipe the floor every night, not just when it looks dirty.

Food storage

Move rice, atta, daal, sugar, spices and biscuits into airtight containers. Cardboard and thin plastic bags do not stop roaches. Take out the garbage before bed and keep the bin lid closed.

Cracks and gaps

Seal the gaps around pipes, the sink cut-out, the tile edges and the back of the cabinets with silicone or cement filler. If they cannot hide, they cannot nest.

After the clean-up, place gel bait in the spots your night inspection found active. We cover how in the gel section below. If you want to know how to prevent cockroaches in the kitchen long term, the cleaning routine is what keeps the result, so build it into your day.

A serious kitchen cockroach infestation needs more than cleaning. Good cockroach control in the kitchen means treating the hiding spots and the nest, not just the floor you can see.

Cleaned everything and the roaches still come back? That usually means the nest is somewhere you cannot reach. Get a free cockroach inspection from KNS Pest Management. Why Cockroaches Keep Coming Back in Kitchens

Three things bring them back: leftover food, leftover water and leftover shelter. You can remove the first two in a day. The shelter is harder, because roaches squeeze into gaps as thin as a coin. And there is a fourth problem most people miss: egg cases. A cleaning day or a spray kills the adults, but the egg cases hide in cracks and hatch two to four weeks later. That is why a kitchen can look clear for three weeks and then suddenly fill up again. It is not a new infestation. It is the old one finishing its cycle.

Where Cockroaches Hide in a Home

If you know where they hide, you know where to put bait and where to seal. Roaches choose places that are dark, warm, tight and close to water. They like to touch surfaces on both sides of their body, which is why they pack into narrow cracks.

Cockroaches in Bathrooms

A bathroom is damp all day, which is exactly what roaches need. If you are searching for how to get rid of cockroaches in the bathroom, check these:

  • The floor drain and the gap where the pipe meets the floor
  • The pipes behind the toilet and under the basin
  • Vanity cabinets and the wood at the bottom of the door frame
  • Cracked tiles and loose grout
  • The geyser area and any exhaust fan opening

Cover floor drains with a mesh cover, fix leaking taps and flush tanks, keep the door open after bathing so the room dries, and seal the pipe gaps. Large dark roaches coming up from the drain are often American cockroaches from the sewer line. Cleaning will not stop those, you have to block the way in.

Cockroaches in Walls, Cabinets and Appliances

When roaches come out of a wall socket or from behind a tile, the infestation has already moved into the building structure. Common hiding places are wall voids (hollow spaces behind plaster), the back of cupboards and wardrobes, the area behind the fridge, microwave and washing machine, switchboards and electrical boxes (they like the warmth), the gaps under and behind built-in kitchen units, and cracks along skirting boards.

This is the stage where DIY starts to fail, because you cannot reach what is inside the wall. Roaches in electrical areas also make a spray-only approach unsafe, so do not spray into switchboards or sockets.

Why Cockroaches Keep Coming Back

Not cleaning enough is only a small part of the answer. Here is what usually happens.

They breed faster than you think

A female German cockroach carries her egg case until just before it hatches, and each case holds roughly 30 to 40 eggs. The nymphs reach adulthood in a matter of weeks in warm kitchens. In ideal conditions, one pair can lead to thousands of roaches in a year. That is why “I only saw two” is rarely true.

Water is the real limit

Roaches can go for weeks without food but only about a week without water. Leaking taps, a wet sink, dirty drains and damp cabinets keep a colony alive even in a clean home.

They travel from outside

In most Pakistani cities, roaches enter from shared drains, gutter lines, neighbouring flats, delivery cartons and grocery bags. You can clean your own house perfectly and still get new roaches from the building next door.

Sprays scatter them

Many contact sprays and strong-smelling repellents make roaches leave the area they are in. They move to the next room, or the next flat, and come back when the smell fades. The nest is untouched.

Hidden breeding sites go untreated

The colony is behind the wall, under the cabinet, or in the motor area of an appliance. Until that is treated, killing the visible ones is like cutting the leaves off a weed.

So the recurring pattern is simple: food, water, shelter and entry points. If one of these stays open, the cockroach colony rebuilds.

A recurring infestation is almost always one of these four gaps left open. Cockroach breeding does not stop while food, water and shelter are available, and cockroach eggs hatch in hidden cracks, so a home infestation can look cleared for a few weeks and then return.

Fast, Natural and Overnight Methods: What You Can Expect

A lot of people search for how to get rid of cockroaches overnight, fast, naturally or with home remedies. Here is an honest answer.

Overnight, you can kill the ones you see, but you cannot end the infestation. A soapy water spray kills roaches on contact. So does a shoe. Neither touches the nest or the egg cases.

Boric acid works, slowly. A thin dusting of boric acid powder in cracks and behind appliances, where children and pets cannot reach, kills roaches over several days when they walk through it and clean themselves. Do not make piles. Roaches avoid heavy piles. A fine film is what works. Keep it away from food, from the kitchen counter, and from anywhere kids play.

Baking soda and sugar is weak. It is a popular home remedy, but results are inconsistent and it should not be your main plan for anything beyond a few roaches.

Smells do not fix a roach problem. Peppermint oil, clove, bay leaves and vinegar may make roaches avoid a spot for a short time, but they do not kill a colony. We looked at this in more detail in our guide on natural insect repellents and whether they work.

What works fastest in real life is the combination: deep clean tonight, remove water access, seal what you can, place gel bait tomorrow, and expect to see fewer roaches after a few days and a clear kitchen in two to four weeks.

If you are asking how to get rid of cockroaches forever, the honest answer is that nothing works forever on its own. What keeps them away for the long term is the habit set in the prevention section below, plus treating the nest once so you start from zero.

Does Roach Killer Gel Work?

Yes, roach killer gel works well when it is used the right way, and it is the method most professionals rely on for kitchens. It is slow by design. Gel bait is a food-like paste mixed with a slow-acting active ingredient. A roach eats it, goes back to the nest, and dies there. Other roaches then feed on the droppings or the body and are affected too. This is how a gel treatment for cockroaches can reach the nest you cannot see.

You will see it sold as cockroach gel or roach gel bait. Both mean the same thing, and the cockroach bait works best when you use it in small amounts in many spots.

A few rules decide whether it works:

  • Placement matters more than quantity. Put small dots (about the size of a rice grain) in the corners and edges where roaches travel: hinges, the back of cabinets, under the sink, behind the stove, near the fridge motor. Many small dots work better than a few big ones.
  • Do not spray near the bait. Repellent sprays and strong cleaners on the same spot make roaches avoid it, and the bait stops working.
  • Keep competing food away. If your kitchen has crumbs everywhere, the roaches eat those instead. This is why the clean-up comes first.
  • Be patient. You may see more roaches in the first two or three days as they come out to feed. That is normal. Reapply after a week or two where the bait has been eaten.
  • Keep it out of reach of children and pets. Place it in cracks and hidden spots, not on open surfaces.

Where gel struggles is a heavy, multi-room infestation, or when roaches have a second source such as a drain line or a neighbouring unit. One tube from a shop will not fix that. This is also where the nest location matters, which is why the night inspection at the start of this guide is worth doing. For serious kitchen infestations, especially German cockroaches, a trained technician uses professional gel in the exact places the colony uses, and that is a different level of result from a shop-bought tube.

Used gel and spray with no result? Do not buy a third product. Book a free inspection and let a technician find the nest. Send a WhatsApp message with a photo of where you see the roaches to get started. See how our professional cockroach control in Lahore works.

What Is the Best Roach Killer for an Infestation?

There is no single best roach killer for every home. The right choice depends on the size of the problem and the place. Here is how the main options compare.

Spray. Kills roaches that are in contact with it and can leave a residue for a short time. Good for quick knock-down on visible roaches. Weak against hidden nests, and it can scatter roaches into other rooms.

Gel bait. The best choice for kitchens and for German cockroaches. Slow, but it reaches the colony. Needs correct placement.

Traps. Glue traps do not solve an infestation, but they are the best tool for finding out where roaches are and how many. Use them to monitor, not to treat.

Boric acid dust. Cheap and effective in dry cracks and voids, but slow, and it must be kept away from children, pets and food.

Professional treatment. A combination of gel, targeted crack and crevice treatment and, where needed, other methods suited to the building. The advantage is the inspection: a technician finds the source, not just the symptoms.

For a light problem in one kitchen, gel plus cleaning is usually enough. For recurring or severe cases, the best roach killer is the one applied by someone who has found the nest.

Spraying for Cockroaches: Does It Solve the Problem?

Spraying for cockroaches gives quick, visible results, which is why it is so popular. You spray, roaches drop, and it feels like the problem is over. The reality is more complicated.

Cockroach spraying is also the first thing most people try, and that is exactly why so many homes end up spraying every week with no lasting result.

A cockroach spray works on the surface. It kills the roaches it touches and leaves some residue. But the hiding places, the cracks and the wall voids, are mostly out of reach. Egg cases are protected and often survive. And as mentioned above, a lot of roaches simply move away from sprayed areas and return later.

A store-bought roach killer spray also makes gel bait less effective if you use both in the same areas, because roaches avoid the residue.

Spraying has a place in a professional plan, in specific cracks and crevices, using the right product at the right dose. What does not work is spraying the open kitchen floor and counters every few days. It costs money, exposes your family to chemicals around food, and does not end the problem. If you have been spraying for more than two or three weeks and still see roaches, that is the sign to stop and get the source checked.

Types of Cockroaches Found in Homes

Knowing which cockroach you have changes how you treat it.

German Cockroach

The German cockroach is the one most homes, apartments and restaurants struggle with. It is small (about 1.5 cm), light brown with two dark stripes behind the head, and it rarely lives far from food and water. It lives mostly in kitchens and bathrooms, in cabinet corners, behind appliances and near sinks. It also breeds extremely fast. If you have small roaches in the kitchen, this is almost certainly your species, and gel bait is the standard approach.

American Cockroaches and Flying Cockroaches

American cockroaches are much bigger, about 4 to 5 cm, reddish-brown, and often come from drains, sewer lines, basements and outdoor gutters. They are what people mean when they say flying cockroaches. Many large roaches can glide or fly short distances, especially in warm, humid weather, and they often show up at night near lights. They usually enter from outside, so sealing drains, mesh covers and gap-sealing matter more than bait here. Seeing one occasionally in a bathroom or at ground level is common. Seeing them every night usually means a drain or sewer connection nearby needs attention.

How to Get Rid of Cockroaches from an Underground Water Tank

If you have found cockroaches in or around your underground water tank, do not pour pesticide into it. That water can end up in your taps, and chemicals in stored drinking or washing water are a health risk.

Instead, work out how they are getting in: a damaged or loose cover, gaps around the inlet and overflow pipes, cracks in the tank wall, or an open vent. Close or mesh these, and check the plumbing and walls around the tank for cracks. Then have the tank properly emptied and cleaned. Our water tank cleaning service in Lahore removes the sludge, dead insects and organic material that attract them. Stagnant, uncovered water also invites mosquito breeding, so it helps to read our guide on how to prevent dengue at home as well.

If roaches are coming from the tank room or the surrounding area, a targeted pest treatment of the outside perimeter, not the water, is the safe option.

Can Cockroaches Be Completely Prevented?

You cannot make a home 100% roach-proof, especially in a dense city, but you can make it a very bad place for them. If you are wondering how to prevent cockroaches, these habits help you prevent cockroaches better than any spray. This is what to build into your routine for cockroach prevention:

  • Seal cracks and gaps around pipes, sinks, cabinets, tiles and skirting.
  • Clean drains weekly and fit mesh covers on floor drains.
  • Fix leaks in taps, pipes, flush tanks and AC drip lines. If your roof or walls are damp, see our waterproofing in Lahore roof leakage guide, because damp walls feed roaches too.
  • Handle garbage properly. Closed bin, taken out every night.
  • Store food in airtight containers, including pet food.
  • Dry the kitchen and bathroom before bed.
  • Check what comes in. Roaches and their egg cases travel in cardboard boxes, grocery bags, secondhand appliances and delivery cartons. Unpack outside when you can, and do not store cardboard in the kitchen.
  • Reduce clutter. Piles of newspapers, boxes and bags are free housing.
  • Do a kitchen deep cleaning every few months, including behind and under appliances.

If you live in an apartment, remember that prevention is partly shared. Talk to your neighbours or building management if a drain line or a common wall is the source.

When Home Cockroach Control Is Not Enough

DIY works for a small, new problem. It stops working when the colony is bigger than what you can reach. Consider professional cockroach control when:

  • The roaches come back within a month, however much you clean
  • You see them in the daytime, or in several rooms
  • You find egg cases and nymphs in many places
  • You have already used spray and gel and nothing has changed
  • You run a restaurant, bakery, cloud kitchen or any food business
  • You suspect the nest is inside a wall, a cabinet or an appliance
  • You have young children, elderly people or someone with asthma at home, and want the treatment done carefully and with minimal chemical exposure

A proper cockroach exterminator does three things you cannot easily do yourself. First, an inspection to find the harbourage points and the source. Second, targeted treatment, which is gel, crack and crevice work and, where needed, other methods, instead of blanket spraying. Third, a follow-up, because egg cases hatch after the first visit and need a second round.

Cockroach Control for Homes and Businesses

The treatment changes with the place.

Homes and apartments. Residential cockroach control focuses on the kitchen, bathrooms, laundry and storage areas, with extra care for children and pets. In apartment blocks, treating one flat while the neighbours’ flats stay untreated can limit results, so shared-wall problems are worth discussing early.

Offices. Office cockroach control is mostly about pantries, kitchenettes, server and electrical rooms and the food that staff leave in desks and drawers.

Restaurants, hotels and food businesses. Restaurant cockroach control needs a regular schedule rather than a one-time visit. Kitchens, storage rooms, drains and delivery areas get re-infested constantly, and a pest problem can mean food-safety trouble and lost customers. The same applies to hotels, bakeries and warehouses.

For all of these, commercial cockroach control works best as a plan: inspection, treatment, follow-up and a repeat schedule. Related pests often travel with roaches, so if you also see flies in your kitchen, our flies control services in Lahore can help, and if you notice droppings that do not look like roach droppings, check our rat control services in Lahore. Frequently Asked Questions

What is a fast way to get rid of roaches?

The fastest approach that actually lasts is a same-day deep clean, removing standing water, sealing visible gaps and placing gel bait in active spots. You will see fewer roaches within a few days. Contact sprays kill faster, but only the roaches they touch, and they do not stop the nest.

What kills cockroaches permanently?

No single product kills them permanently. What works is removing food, water and hiding places and then using bait or professional treatment to eliminate the colony, including follow-up for egg cases. If you leave a leak or an entry point open, they can come back, even after a professional visit.

What kills cockroaches naturally overnight?

Nothing natural kills a whole infestation overnight. Soapy water kills the roaches it touches. Boric acid in dry cracks works over several days, and diatomaceous earth works slowly in dry areas. Both should be kept away from children, pets and food. Natural methods are fine for small problems and for support, but they rarely finish a real infestation.

What smells keep roaches away?

Peppermint, clove, citrus peel, bay leaf and vinegar are often said to repel roaches. They may keep them away from a spot for a short time, but they do not kill a colony or fix the cause. Think of smells as a minor add-on, not a solution.

What keeps roaches away permanently?

A home that gives them nothing: no food left out, no leaks, no damp, sealed cracks, covered drains, closed garbage and a short weekly routine. There is no smell or spray that keeps them away forever, but this habit set gets very close.

How do you get rid of a heavy cockroach infestation?

A heavy infestation, meaning daytime sightings, many rooms, nymphs and egg cases, usually needs a professional. A technician inspects to find the source, treats with gel and targeted crack and crevice methods, and comes back to deal with the egg cases that hatch afterwards. Meanwhile, clean thoroughly, reduce water and avoid random spraying, which scatters the roaches. Our cockroach control in Lahore service follows this approach.

How fast can roaches multiply?

Very fast. A female German cockroach produces an egg case with roughly 30 to 40 eggs and can do this repeatedly in her lifetime, and the nymphs mature in weeks in warm kitchens. In good conditions, a small group can become a large colony in a few months. This is why early action is much cheaper than waiting.

Can cockroach gel get rid of an infestation?

For a small to moderate kitchen infestation, yes, if the placement is right and the kitchen is clean enough that roaches go for the bait. For a heavy or multi-room infestation, gel alone is usually not enough and works better as part of a professional plan.

Why do cockroaches come back after spraying?

Because spray kills what it touches, not the nest or the egg cases. Some roaches also flee sprayed areas and return later, and new ones can come in through drains or neighbouring units. Without removing food and water and treating the hiding places, the numbers rebuild.

How long does it take to get rid of cockroaches?

A small problem handled properly can take two to four weeks, because you have to wait for the egg cases to hatch and for the bait to work. Heavy infestations can take longer and need more than one visit. Anyone who promises a complete result in a single day is skipping the egg cases.

When should I call professional cockroach pest control?

Call when roaches return within a month, when you see them in daylight or in several rooms, when you have tried gel and spray without success, when you run a food business, or when you cannot find where they are coming from. An inspection is the right first step, and it often saves you money compared with repeated store-bought products.

What kills cockroaches quickly?

Contact sprays and soapy water kill the roaches they touch within minutes. Gel bait takes a few days but reaches the nest. For quick results that last, use both in the right places: spray or soap for the ones you see, gel for the ones you do not.

How to get rid of cockroaches in a room permanently?

Empty the room’s cabinets and wardrobes, vacuum every corner and edge, seal cracks along skirting and around sockets, remove cardboard and clutter, and place gel bait in the dark corners. Keep food out of the room. If roaches keep appearing from the same wall or corner, the nest is inside it and needs a professional.

How to get rid of cockroaches in the kitchen permanently?

Clean behind the fridge and stove, fix every water leak, store food in airtight containers, seal gaps around pipes and cabinets, and keep gel bait in active spots. A kitchen stays clear only if the routine continues, because new roaches can arrive from drains or neighbouring units.
